Jane and Gordon Martz were a husband-and-wife design duo who worked for Marshall Studios in Veedersburg, Indiana, starting in the 1950s. Gordon's family actually owned the studio, and together he and Jane became known for their distinctive ceramic lamps that became staples of mid-century American design.
Their lamps are recognizable for the handcrafted ceramic bases often in earthy, organic glazes like stoneware browns, blues, greens, and speckled finishes paired with warm walnut accents like neck caps, finials, or built-in table shelves. The table lamp design (with the wood shelf wrapped around the base) is especially iconic and highly collectible today.
Marshall Studios pieces are sought after for their understated, sculptural quality and the way they blend ceramic and wood in a really thoughtful, functional way. They show up regularly in mid-century interiors and vintage design collections, and original pieces have become increasingly valuable on the resale market.
