BACKSTORY:

While we don’t always get the background stories from the pieces that come into our collection, this table has a remarkable American history worth sharing.

Originally produced by Dimension Manufacturing Company, later known as Morgan Manufacturing, this piece has roots intertwined with aviation history. The company was operated by David and Bob Morgan—interestingly, Bob Morgan was the captain of the legendary “Memphis Belle.”

The previous owners of this table were also pilots and shared a heartfelt story of how they purchased it from the same company run by the “Memphis Belle” pilot. They even showed me a photo of their son standing beneath the nose of the famous aircraft with Bob Morgan himself—a rare and meaningful connection.

Dimension Manufacturing was a successful furniture maker until the Great Depression hit, forcing many to close their doors. During that tough time, Bob Morgan became the “watchman,” guarding his father’s factory for just $50 a month. He recalls, “I’ll never forget it. My father was completely busted. We lost everything, even had to sell our house.”

But fate took a turn when Cornelia Vanderbilt, inheritor of the Biltmore estate, generously allowed Bob and his family to live there rent-free in gratitude for their work caring for parts of the property.

In 1940, Bob Morgan enlisted as an Aviation Cadet in Richmond, VA, and by 1942, he was qualified as the first pilot of the four-engined B-24 Liberator. He also made history as the pilot leading the first B-29 bombing attack on Tokyo.

This table isn’t just a beautiful vintage piece—it carries a rich, patriotic story of perseverance, heroism, and American resilience.
